Ward excelled in NCAA Division I lacrosse during his tenure at the University of Virginia from 2003 to 2006. He showcased remarkable skill as a three-time USILA All-American (2004, 2005, 2006) while playing in the attack position. His contributions were instrumental in leading the Virginia Cavaliers to two NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championships in 2003 and 2006.
In the 2006 NCAA tournament, Ward was deservedly honored as the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. That remarkable year also saw him clinch the prestigious Tewaaraton Trophy, awarded annually to the nation’s top lacrosse player, and the Lt. Raymond Enners Award as the USILA’s Player of the Year.
Following his collegiate career, Ward ventured into professional outdoor lacrosse, joining the Major League Lacrosse team, the Washington Bayhawks, after being selected in the first round of the 2006 MLL college draft. His exceptional performance earned him the title of MLL Rookie of the Year in that same year.
Coach Schoeny enters his 20th year at New Trier after joining the coaching staff in 2003. As the Offensive Coordinator, he has been integral to the success of the program. Schoney is a two time IHSA Assistant Coach of the Year and has been a part of 11 state championships. He brings a level of knowledge, skill and energy unmatched in the state. Look for both of his sons, Casey and Dylan, on the field practicing with the team, as they live in Wilmette.
Jack was a 3-year varsity member, 2 time state Champion and a 2 time US Lacrosse All-American. Jack went on to play at DI Quinnipiac University, where he was a 4-year player and team captain his senior year. Jack is the current Head Varsity Girls Lacrosse coach at Regina Dominica, a level two cross fit trainer where he is a coach and foundation teacher at Crossfit Wilmette and a member of the Chicago Outlaws box lacrosse team. Jack lives in Wilmette.
Terry grew up in Upstate NY and has lived in Wilmette for 15 years. His coaching experience has been in the Westfield NJ town youth league, Lacrosse America, Team One, Evanston Youth and is on the current staff of True Lacrosse. Terry’s son graduated from NT in 2013 as an All-American and played at DI Monmouth University in NJ. Terry Played at Niagara University and has recently been on the championship team in the over 50 division at the Vail Shootout. Terry brings years of experience and knowledge to the JTL staff.
Steen was a 2x State Champion and Central Suburban League Conference Player of the Year while playing attack at New Trier. Steen holds the record for most assists in a season and is 8th all-time in points for a season. After New Trier, he went on to Depauw University where he was a four-year starter, Captain, and owns the school scoring record.
Steen brings a wealth of offensive knowledge and energy to Junior Trevian’s staff. During the day Steen works for Salesforce and lives in Glencoe.
After a successful 25-year tenure at New Trier, Coach Herrala has shifted his focus to the Junior Trevian Lacrosse program. Renowned as the Coach of the Year in 2019 by both the NFHS and IHSA, Coach Herrala boasts an impressive track record, leading the Trevian’s to 218 victories in his 12 seasons as Head Coach, including an outstanding 7-3 record in the State Championship game.
Throughout his coaching career, Coach Herrala’s teams have consistently ranked among the top in the Midwest. Notably, he has mentored over 130 athletes who went on to play college lacrosse, with 40 of them excelling at the D1 level. Beyond his coaching achievements, Coach Herrala takes great pride in instilling valuable life lessons in his players, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and personal growth beyond the lacrosse field.
Widely respected and admired in the lacrosse community, Coach Herrala served as the first president of the Illinois Boys Lacrosse Coaches Association and played a crucial role in its establishment. His extensive network within the lacrosse community is unparalleled.
